InfoGraphic: Celebrating the deployment of 1 million L300 thin clients

Today, we are very excited to share with you that we have shipped over 1 million L300 units to date. We originally launched the L300 product line in 2010 and since then it has provided a low cost, powerful solution for desktop virtualization to users like you. The L-series product line was first launched in 2004 with the L100. Additional models such as L110, L120, L130, L200 and L230 soon followed. However, the L300 has been our most unique and successful model.

The L300 model was a result of a discussion internally around how we can enable IT managers to utilize the unused computing resources of a powerful PC, and make it available to up to 100 users at the same time.

The L300 has been designed with our own proprietary SoC (system-on-a-chip) called “Numo™”, an ARM processor and solid cover shock resistant shell., These features allow the L-300 to withstand humidity and to overcome the standard PC issues such as boot failures. Over the past 5 years, the L300 has provided value to its users by being incredibly stable with just a 0.2% failure rate in the field, giving them an amazing return on investment.

Today, when a solution is built to meet your user’s needs currently; it is quite likely to not be relevant to them in the future. But L300 has proved otherwise. The foundations on which L300 is built have never been modified, a testament to a solution, which has withstood quick changing environments in IT. With just the upgrade of the host computers an entire IT infrastructure can be updated,

Whether you are playing a high-quality full-screen video or looking to provide a virtual PC desktop experience to your users, the flexibility of working in different types of environments has made L series consistently popular among you all. With IT managers facing budget constraints and having to make the best out of the available resources, they have liked the ease with which they are able to deploy L series and start using the vSpace management tools.

What’s keeping us busy?

NComputing's L-series products have sold in excess of 1.8M units over the last 10 years. We remain extremely committed to continuous enhancements of NComputing's vSpace software this commitment shown in our upcoming vSpace Pro 10 - bringing the power and flexibility of Cloud computing to our customers.

As mentioned in our last blog 'Coming Soon: vSpace Pro 10' since summer of last year, we began the endeavor to bring you our next generation desktop virtualization solution, vSpace Pro 10.

This software has been designed with feedback from you in mind and will make desktop virtualization more simple and more affordable, with great features to make it even more powerful.

Stay tuned for our upcoming announcement!

VDI Predictions for the new year

$

We had some fantastic developments to announce in 2016, from being ranked the third biggest thin client vendor worldwide, to working with Google on our Chromebook CX110 launch, to shipping our one millionth L300 model unit.

This year we will continue working closely with our customers to provide updates and releases that will continue to enhance their experience. We have several significant initiatives coming up in Q1, starting with the launch of next-generation thin client solution with a new business model to further reduce the initial acquisition cost. We are also expanding our cloud services and enablement to speed up the desktop virtualization deployment further with ease and confidence.

Here are some predictions from our team on wider industry trends:

Young Song; Co-Founder, CEO predicts that in 2017, there will be an emergence of personal computing on virtual machines in the cloud, and “personal use” will grow as a new market that thin client solutions can and should explore. And with the number of devices per household on the rise, the total cost of ownership will become a significant factor and may pivot toward this new trend.

Richard Sah; Co-Founder, CTO predicts that in 2017, end user computing will be spread across various devices where each device serves its purpose. Desktop computing will remain as the main device for productivity activities. 2017 will see the rebirth of thin clients to be smarter and more intelligent, working directly with the cloud for a complete cloud computing experience.

Frank Pesek; Co-Founder, Chief Software Architect predicts that in 2017, we will see a rise in the adoption of Linux desktops due to security concerns. A good example is the systems used by government entities working on Linux OS to protect against the high risk of security breaches. Additionally, with the rise in the adoption of Chrome OS, we can see that the end users are getting comfortable with non-Windows OS.

Computing at work is something most of us take for granted. Companies provide equipment that we use until it either falls apart or the celebrated 3-year PC refresh cycle kicks in (yours is 5 years? Ouch!). Booting up a new work computer calls for a celebration - those spinning balls of death eating your productivity are about to be squashed. But that first keystroke begins anew the inevitable "Countdown to Slowdown."

Desktop virtualization makes every day seem like ‘New Computer Day’— and what’s better is that when the time comes to upgrade the server, everyone connected gets the same productivity bump simultaneously. No more PC-refresh envy amongst colleagues.

Nick Heath over at TechRepublic has published a side-by-side working comparison of the NComputing RX300 thin client (connected to a vSpace Pro 10 installation) and a recent Intel Core i7-based laptop, both running Windows 10. It’s an apples-to-oranges comparison in some respects, but from a users perspective (and that is what we care about) your inner skeptic may be surprised with the results.

We use the RX300 in-house with both vSpace Pro 10 and VERDE VDI. Go see how it fares in Nick's comparison.

Meltdown and Spectre made big news in the last couple of days as exploits of critical vulnerabilities in modern processors.

Security has always been and continues to be of paramount importance for NComputing. Please find the detailed information pertaining to each hardware product family as it relates to these vulnerabilities:

NComputing RX-series thin client (including RX300 for vSpace and RX-HDX for Citrix):

  • Built based on Raspbian Pi 3 platform with processor type: ARM Cortex A53
  • Not affected by Meltdown or Spectre. More details in the Raspberry Pi foundation posting (reference: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/)
  • There is no need for any operating system patches

NComputing L-series, M-series and MX-series thin clients:

NComputing N-series thin client

  • Built based on proprietary processor with Cortex A9 core. Based on information provided in the ARM developer forum this processor is susceptible to variant 1 and variant 2 vulnerabilities (reference: https://developer.arm.com/support/security-update)
  • There is no need for any operating system patches
  • Official statement from NComputing: While the N-series thin clients are built on a processor that is vulnerable to Spectre and Meltdown it is important to keep in mind that these devices use proprietary NComputing firmware executing very specific and pre-defined functionality. It is not possible to inject external applications or micro-code into this locked-down proprietary firmware. Furthermore, the Numo3 chip is our own ASIC and is generally not compatible with external Linux applications. We are confident that the N-series devices are secure and safe to use as along as only unaltered and certified genuine NComputing firmware is installed.

Citrix Ready workspace hub by NComputing

Thin clients have been, up until now, focused on enabling virtualization. The key features most customers want are performance, reliability and manageability. They expect Citrix virtualization to run well, especially high definition graphics and videos, with 100% reliability and minimal IT support.

However, NComputing and Citrix understand that customers are always looking at getting more value out of their virtualization environment. NComputing and Citrix want to solve real business problems; security, worker productivity and optimization of IT resources. Putting more intelligence and features in the end-point is one area that NComputing and Citrix have focused on and invested in.

To that effect, Citrix is launching the Citrix Ready workspace hub program and NComputing is pleased to partner with Citrix in introducing the Citrix Ready workspace hub by NComputing. With features such as Citrix Casting, NComputing and Citrix will have the ability to securely stream all your apps from a mobile device to a large screen connected to a Citrix Ready workspace hub by NComputing. This will allow instant login and session roaming from mobile devices to large monitors. You can use your smart phone for “tap-and-go” security. And for conference rooms, there is wireless docking; no cables or adaptors needed.

NComputing will evolve their RX-HDX thin client into the Citrix Ready workspace hub, bringing innovation and use-case driven features to enterprises. The RX-HDX is an enterprise-ready software and hardware solution for a low price point of $119 MSRP. Citrix Ready verification ensures that it meets the performance, security and manageability demands of an enterprise-grade zero client. The NComputing RX-HDX is already shipping and available worldwide.

The Citrix workspace hub update with be available as a technical preview and available for download on March 31st, 2018. And, if you’re attending Mobile World Congress, Feb 26th to March 1st in Spain, you can also see a demo in the Citrix booth of the Citrix Ready workspace hub by NComputing.

NComputing feels that Citrix is on the right path. There is more and more distributed intelligence, especially smart phones, in today’s complex IT environment. The Citrix Ready workspace hub by NComputing will be able to take advantage of that remote compute power while making the user environment more secure, friendly and efficient. The ability to use a smart phone to transfer a session to a monitor will make it easier for mobile employees to get their job done. To be able to enter a conference room and seamlessly have your session appear on the large screen will end the frustrating search for the illusive correct cable. Using your smart phone to “tap and go” will improve productivity and the security of end points.

What is the Citrix Ready workspace hub by NComputing? The Raspberry Pi based NComputing RX-HDX is a Citrix specific offering; optimized for Citrix Desktop Virtualization and designed for enterprise environments (e.g. HD dual display, RTME integration, 3D Pro and SSO support like Imprivata/Caradigm).

Also:

  • The RX-HDX comes with integrated enterprise-grade central device management solution (NoTouch Center)
  • Low price point. List price for the RX-HDX is $119 with worldwide availability. (Certified and available in major markets worldwide)
  • Unique optional high definition Secondary Display Adapter is $49 MSRP
  • Rugged and clean design for medical, commercial and industrial environments. Added heat sinks allow for no fans, no noise
  • Integral part of the Citrix Ready workspace hub program. The RX-HDX is ready to support proximity authentication, Citrix Casting and management by XenMobile. (Note that Citrix Ready workspace hub will be available as a technical preview and available for download on March 31st, 2018)
